In the remote border region of Karnah, where access to higher education and scientific research has long been a challenge, the story of Dr. Ashfaq Ahmad stands out as a testament to perseverance and purpose. A zoologist, educator, and social worker, Dr. Ahmad has steadily built a career that bridges the gap between academic excellence and community service.
A native of Tangdhar in Kupwara district, Dr. Ahmad’s academic journey reflects both discipline and diversity. Having graduated from Government Degree College Bemina and the University of Kashmir, he went on to pursue advanced studies in Zoology, earning his M.Sc. from the Central University UK, Dehradun, and later completing a Ph.D. from Rajasthan University. His internship at the Forest Research Institute, Dehradun, along with qualifications in toxicology and computer programming, demonstrate a multidisciplinary approach that defines his professional outlook.
Dr. Ahmad’s teaching career has been equally impactful. As guest faculty at Government Degree College Tangdhar and lecturer at Government Higher Secondary School Teetwal, he has nurtured young minds in one of Kashmir’s most geographically isolated areas. His coordination of educational programs with UNICEF and the PRITHAM Education Foundation highlights his commitment to improving learning opportunities at the grassroots level.
An active researcher, Dr. Ahmad has published work on molecular biology, wildlife parasitology, cold-water fisheries, and animal communication in reputed national and international journals. Yet, his influence extends beyond academic circles. Through his educational YouTube channel, Teaching Pathway, and freelance journalism, he strives to make scientific learning accessible to students and the general public alike.
Equally significant is his role as a community leader. As the founder of the RoshanKal Welfare Foundation, Dr. Ahmad has worked to promote education, social awareness, and welfare initiatives across Karnah. His contributions have not gone unnoticed. He was felicitated by Shri Vibhu Nayar, Tribal Secretary, Government of India, during the 2025 Karnah Festival under the Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan, and recognized by the District Administration and Indian Army for fostering civil-military cooperation and supporting local cultural events.
Dr. Ashfaq Ahmad’s work reflects a rare blend of scholarship and social responsibility. In regions like Karnah, where developmental and educational challenges persist, his efforts exemplify how individual dedication can drive community transformation. His journey is a reminder that progress in border areas is not only about infrastructure and connectivity but also about empowering minds and nurturing a culture of learning.
