New Delhi: At a workshop conducted at the BJP headquarters on Thursday, party leaders expressed concerns over a provision in the amended Waqf Act that restricts the right to donate property for charitable purposes to individuals who have been “practising Islam for five years.”
The session, led by BJP president J.P. Nadda, was part of preparations for the party’s upcoming Waqf Sudhar Janjagran Abhiyan, set to run nationwide from April 20 to May 5. The campaign aims to inform citizens at state, block, and mandal levels about the key features of the law.
According to a report by The Print, the workshop also served as a platform for clarifying legal provisions. However, several participants reportedly raised objections to the vague definition of a “practising Muslim.”
“How can someone else decide whether a person is practising Islam? Even a child might say they are. We didn’t receive a satisfactory response,” a party functionary told The Print. While Union Minister Kiren Rijiju was present, sources say his reply failed to fully address the issue.
