Srinagar: A late-night fire broke out in Tangdhar Nard village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Karnah Sub-Division at approximately 11:30 PM on April 7, damaging residential and commercial properties and prompting a swift rescue response by the Indian Army.
The fire, reportedly intensified by dry wood and wind, originated in the homes of Ali Asgar Khan and Abdul Hameed Khawaja, and spread to a nearby shop owned by Mushkoor Ahmad Khawaja. Several residents, including women and children, were trapped inside as the fire quickly engulfed the structures.
With local fire services yet to arrive, a Quick Reaction Team from the nearby unit of the Indian Army’s 34 Maratha Field Regiment, led by Naib Subedar Bhanudas Jadhav, responded to the emergency. The team of 10 soldiers reached the site, assisted in evacuating those trapped, and helped control the fire with the support of local residents.
After the initial rescue efforts, the team joined villagers in containing the blaze using available resources until the arrival of Fire and Emergency Services.
While no casualties were reported, the fire caused significant property damage. Police have initiated an investigation into the cause of the incident, with initial reports indicating it may have been accidental.
