Hyderabad: Asaduddin Owaisi, president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), has demanded the suspension of police officers allegedly responsible for the suicide of a man in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district. Owaisi accused the local police of harassment, which reportedly led to the man’s death.
In a post on social media platform ‘X’, Owaisi emphasized that since Jammu and Kashmir became a Union Territory, it is the Central government’s duty to prevent such “brazen abuse of power.” He stated, “In Kathua, a man was tortured by J&K police to such an extent that he died by suicide. The accused officers and their superiors must be suspended immediately, and criminal proceedings should be initiated against them under Article 311. @AmitShah.”
The deceased, identified as Makhan Din, was allegedly pressured by the local police over suspected links to militants. Before taking his own life, Din recorded a video asserting his innocence and denying any association with terrorist activities. The video quickly went viral on social media, sparking public outrage and prompting investigations by both the police and local administration into the family’s allegations of misconduct.
The incident has reignited concerns over police accountability and the misuse of power in the region. Further details are awaited as the investigations proceed. — PTI
