Karnah, Kupwara : In a moment of immense relief and long-awaited celebration, the people of Karnah woke up to news that has the power to change their lives forever. The Government of India has officially approved the much-anticipated Sadhna Tunnel project, finally breaking the shackles of isolation that have bound this border region of Jammu & Kashmir for decades.
For years, the treacherous Sadhna Top has been the only route connecting Karnah to the Kashmir Valley — a narrow, winding road often blocked by heavy snowfall, avalanches, and landslides. Winters here have been synonymous with fear and helplessness. Families have endured not just bone-chilling temperatures but heartbreaking tragedies, losing loved ones to medical emergencies when access to hospitals was cut off. Pregnant women, ailing patients, students, and daily commuters have all borne the brunt of this unforgiving terrain. Every snowfall brought with it the terror of separation from the outside world, often for weeks at a time.
The announcement of the Sadhna Tunnel approval marks the end of this dark chapter. With the completion of the Detailed Project Report, the Government’s green signal paves the way for an all-weather tunnel that will connect Karnah to the rest of Jammu & Kashmir, regardless of the season. The snow will no longer dictate life and death decisions, and the region can finally envision a future where safety, opportunity, and development are within reach.
Beyond providing safe passage, the tunnel opens the door for economic prosperity, improved healthcare, better education, and tourism. The local population has hailed the decision as historic, expressing profound gratitude to the central leadership for responding to their long-standing demand. Heartfelt thanks have poured in for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, whose commitment to the region’s development has now manifested into reality.
The Sadhna Tunnel is part of a broader infrastructure revolution sweeping through Jammu & Kashmir. As part of a ₹10,637 crore package, 19 major road and tunnel projects have received approval. Among these are the Peer-Ki-Gali Tunnel on the strategic Mughal Road, the Zaznar–Shopian corridor, the new four-lane flyover from Lal Chowk to Parimpora, improvements on the Trehgam–Chamkote highway section, the Magam Flyover on the Narbal–Gulmarg road, the Qazigund Bypass, and several other transformative initiatives that promise to reshape the region’s connectivity and economic landscape.
For the people of Karnah, however, the Sadhna Tunnel is more than a piece of infrastructure; it is the answer to decades of prayers and pleas. It is a beacon of hope that signals a future where they are no longer trapped by geography or weather, but finally, firmly, connected to opportunity, safety, and the rest of the nation.
