Karnah: In a step aimed at improving local infrastructure and community support, the Indian Army’s Shakti Vijay Brigade has built a protective shed at the Shamshan Ghat of the Sikh community in Triboni village, Karnah, a remote area along the Line of Control in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
The structure is intended to ease longstanding difficulties faced by the local Sikh population during cremation rituals, especially in harsh weather conditions. Without any shelter at the site, the community had faced repeated challenges during snowfall and rains, often impacting the conduct of last rites.
Karan Singh, a local resident, said the shed would provide much-needed relief.
“During winter and rainy months, performing cremation was extremely difficult. Wet firewood and exposure to cold made it tough for families to conduct the final rites properly. This shed will help in those situations,” he said.
Army officials said the initiative was part of efforts to enhance civil-military relations and assist communities in remote areas. The work was carried out by the Engineer OC unit under the supervision of local command officers.
Community members have welcomed the move, noting it as a positive development that addresses a practical need. They said such interventions strengthen the bond between security forces and local populations.
The facility is expected to serve residents from multiple nearby villages.
