Keran: Keran witnessed solemn yet spirited celebrations as the Indian Army marked the 10th Armed Forces Veterans’ Day and Indian Army Day with events that highlighted the valour, sacrifice and enduring bond between the Army and the civilian population.
The Rashtriya Rifles Battalion of Keran Sector, Kupwara, organised the 10th Armed Forces Veterans’ Day at Keran on January 14, 2026. Armed Forces Veterans’ Day is observed annually on January 14 to honour the legacy and distinguished service of Field Marshal KM Cariappa, the first Commander in Chief of the Indian Army, who retired on this day in 1953.
The event paid tribute to the courage, sacrifices and dedicated service of veterans who have served the nation with distinction. An outreach programme was organised on the occasion, during which veterans shared experiences from their years of service, motivating the younger generation and reinforcing the values of discipline and patriotism. The veterans also expressed appreciation for the Indian Army’s initiatives aimed at addressing their welfare and needs after retirement.
A total of 11 ex servicemen and six widows of ex servicemen who had served in the Indian Army participated in the programme. The gathering provided a platform for meaningful interaction between veterans and serving personnel, fostering camaraderie and mutual respect. The veterans were briefed on various welfare schemes, education and scholarship opportunities, health and pension policies, and employment avenues. A health check up booth and a grievance redressal cell were also set up to address immediate concerns of the attendees.
Meanwhile, Indian Army Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm on January 15, 2026, at Government Boys High School Kundian. The event brought together Indian Army personnel, civil dignitaries, local residents, teachers and school children to honour the bravery and selfless service of the Army.
Students actively participated in the celebrations, presenting a special cultural programme that included patriotic dances and renditions of popular army songs. The performances reflected the deep sense of respect and gratitude the younger generation holds for soldiers who safeguard the nation’s borders day and night.
Local residents expressed that every victory of the Indian Army is felt as their own, and every sacrifice fills their hearts with pride. Speakers highlighted the Army’s role beyond border security, noting its consistent support during natural calamities, medical emergencies, infrastructure development and youth engagement initiatives. Civil society members and teachers also praised the Army’s contribution to maintaining peace, harmony and nation building in the region.
