Kupwara, April 12: Even as the region reeled from a tragic accident earlier in the day—where two girl students died after a bus from Sogam Government Degree College met with an accident—another devastating road mishap struck north Kashmir, this time along the Machil-Kalaroos road in Kupwara district, leaving one person dead and several others seriously injured.
As per reliable sources, an Alto vehicle (JK09C 1467) met with a tragic accident near Sarkuli, around eight kilometers beyond the Cement Bridge. The vehicle lost control and rolled down into a deep gorge, resulting in the on-spot death of a local resident, Fayaz Ahmad Harry of Machil.
Local residents and police teams rushed to the scene, launching an immediate rescue operation. Multiple injured passengers were evacuated and shifted to nearby medical facilities, with some reported to be in critical condition.
This incident comes just hours after a fatal road accident in Vodhpora, Handwara, where two girl students lost their lives and over a dozen were injured, triggering widespread grief across the region.
The back-to-back accidents have raised serious concerns over road safety, especially along hilly and remote stretches of north Kashmir. Locals have urged the administration to upgrade road infrastructure and improve traffic regulation to prevent further tragedies.
