Ramallah, West Bank – The Palestinian Authority (PA) has temporarily suspended Al Jazeera’s operations in the occupied West Bank, accusing the network of broadcasting “inciting material” and “stirring strife,” according to the official Palestinian news agency, Wafa.
The decision was made by a ministerial committee comprising the culture, interior, and communications ministries. The PA alleged that the broadcaster aired reports deemed “deceiving and divisive.”
No immediate response was issued by Al Jazeera Media Network.
This suspension follows an earlier move by Fatah, the dominant faction in the PA, banning Al Jazeera’s coverage in the governorate of Jenin. Fatah accused the network of exacerbating divisions through its reporting on recent clashes between Palestinian security forces and armed groups in the region.
Al Jazeera has pushed back against these accusations, labeling Fatah’s stance as an “incitement campaign” against its journalists and coverage.
Escalating Tensions in Jenin
The PA’s actions come amid heightened tensions in Jenin, a hotspot of armed resistance against Israeli occupation. Palestinian security forces have recently intensified raids in the area, independent of Israeli military operations, leading to the deaths of several Palestinians.
Al Jazeera’s Hamdah Salhut, reporting from Amman, described these raids as deeply unpopular. “The PA has stepped up its crackdowns in places like Jenin over the past month, resulting in significant casualties,” Salhut said.
Criticism Over Press Freedom
The PA’s decision has drawn criticism from Palestinian leaders and organizations. Mustafa Barghouti, secretary-general of the Palestinian National Initiative, described the move as a “big mistake” and called for its immediate reversal.
“Al Jazeera has been instrumental in exposing crimes against Palestinians and promoting their cause. Restricting their operations undermines freedom of the press,” Barghouti told Al Jazeera from Ramallah.
Broader Implications
This suspension adds to a growing list of challenges faced by Al Jazeera in the region. In September, Israeli forces issued a military order to shut down the network’s West Bank bureau in Ramallah.
Meanwhile, the PA’s ongoing security coordination with Israel, coupled with its intensified raids in Jenin, has drawn sharp criticism from Palestinian factions and civil groups. The Popular Resistance Committees accused the PA of aligning with the “Zionist agenda” through its actions.
As clashes continue, the PA’s decision to suspend Al Jazeera’s operations highlights the complexities of internal Palestinian politics and the pressures on press freedom in the region.
