Karnah: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited the shelling-affected areas of Karnah today to personally assess the extensive damage caused by recent cross-border shelling between India and Pakistan. The visit comes amid rising tensions along the Line of Control (LoC), which have led to widespread property destruction and severe hardships for local communities.
CM Abdullah was accompanied by Nasir Aslam Wani, Advisor to the Chief Minister; MLA Karnah Javaid Mirchal; Personnel Secretary to MLA Karnah Haji Tasleem Mir; Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kupwara; SSP Kupwara; SDM Karnah; Tehsildar Karnah, and senior officers from various departments. Together, they inspected the affected areas and interacted with the local residents to understand their grievances and requirements.
Accompanied by senior officials from the civil administration and security forces, CM Abdullah met with affected families, local leaders, and relief workers. He expressed deep concern over the suffering faced by the border communities and assured immediate government support for rehabilitation and relief efforts.
“The people of Karnah have shown immense resilience in the face of repeated ceasefire violations,” Abdullah stated. “We will ensure that adequate compensation is provided to the victims, and steps are taken to strengthen infrastructure and safety in these vulnerable areas.”
During his interaction with the affected families, CM Abdullah announced the construction of bunkers in border areas to enhance the safety of residents against future shelling. He emphasized that the district administration has been directed to expedite damage assessments and submit a detailed report to his office. Deputy Commissioner Kupwara noted that relief measures are already underway, and the construction of bunkers will begin soon. He added, “While there is significant property damage, we are grateful that there was no loss of life. Relief camps and bunkers will be established to ensure safety in critical zones.”
In addition to relief measures, the CM also reviewed key development projects, including the 12 MW Hydroelectric Power Project, which is expected to significantly enhance power supply in the region. He also inspected the SDH Tangdar expansion, which will increase its capacity from 30 to 50 beds and include a new Dialysis Unit equipped with three machines. Although the inauguration is postponed, CM Abdullah reiterated his commitment to completing the project soon.
The Chief Minister stressed the need for long-term solutions to protect border residents from future hostilities. He directed the administration to ensure swift delivery of relief materials, including temporary shelters, food, and medical aid. His visit not only brought immediate relief to the victims but also reflected the government’s commitment to development, safety, and support for the people living in these high-risk border areas.
